Every way to pay for private school in Charleston

West Virginia has one main program, the Hope Scholarship, and no tax-credit scholarship. These five pages cover Hope and the money that fills the gaps around it for families in Kanawha, Putnam, Boone, Lincoln and Clay counties.

Quick answer

Charleston-area families pay for private and home education mainly with West Virginia's Hope Scholarship, worth $5,435.62 for a full 2026-27 year, because the state has no tax-credit scholarship. Catholic school families can add diocesan tuition assistance of up to 50%, and families with preschoolers use free Universal Pre-K.
