Private high school in the Charleston area with Hope

Which schools in Kanawha, Putnam and Boone counties run through grade 12, how the Hope Scholarship pays for high school, and how dual credit and exam fees fit the account.

Quick answer

Charleston-area high school students can use West Virginia's Hope Scholarship, worth $5,435.62 for a full 2026-27 year, for tuition at a participating private high school and for dual-credit courses, AP exams and college-entrance tests. Private schools running through grade 12 are found in Charleston, Cross Lanes, Elkview, South Charleston, Hurricane, Scott Depot, Madison and Clay.

Where the high school options are

Eight of the thirteen schools with federal records in the five counties run through grade 12. They are Charleston Catholic High School downtown (grades 6-12) and seven Christian schools in Cross Lanes, Elkview, South Charleston, Hurricane, Scott Depot, Madison and Clay. The Catholic grade schools, the Montessori programs and the Islamic elementary all end at grade 8 or earlier. The table below lists each with its grades and Hope status, drawn from federal records and the Board's list.

Hope across four high school years

A high schooler uses the same account as a younger child: $5,435.62 per full year, deposited quarterly. What changes is how families use it. Many high school families pay tuition first, then direct what remains to AP and college-entrance exam fees, dual-credit courses and technology. Because unspent money rolls forward with a June 15 continuation filing, some families save in early years for heavier junior and senior costs.

Dual credit near home

West Virginia State University in Institute and BridgeValley Community and Technical College in South Charleston both run dual-enrollment programs, and Hope covers dual-credit tuition, fees and materials. Ask the high school which college partners it uses and whether those charges can be billed to the Hope portal.

Students with disabilities and age 21

The Hope FAQ says a student with a disability can stay in the program until age 21 if the family does not issue a diploma, with proof of disability required after four years of high school. Families weighing a fifth year should talk with the school and the Board early.

Switching schools in high school

Hope students who leave a participating school mid-year are withdrawn in the portal, and the school must refund unearned tuition to the account within 30 days. The family can then use that money at another participating school, a microschool or online program, so a mid-year move from a Putnam County school to a Kanawha one does not mean losing the funds.
