Common questions

How is the 50% Hope Scholarship amount paid for a family applying in fall 2026?

A family approved in the Hope Scholarship's 50% tier receives $2,717.81 for 2026-27. If the Notice of Intent is on file by October 1, it comes in three deposits of about $906 on October 15, January 15 and April 15. If the notice is filed by January 2 instead, the Hope Scholarship pays two deposits of about $1,359 in January and April.

Why does the Hope Scholarship calculator show $5,435.62 for every grade?

The Hope Scholarship pays the same amount for every grade from kindergarten through 12th grade. For 2026-27 that amount is $5,435.62, based on the prior year's statewide average per-pupil public school funding. The Hope Scholarship calculator uses the full-year figure; families applying late in the year receive a percentage of it, set by the date they applied.

Does a second child double the Hope Scholarship for a Charleston family?

Yes. The Hope Scholarship is awarded per student, and each eligible child gets a separate portal account. Two Charleston-area children funded for the full 2026-27 year receive $5,435.62 each, or $10,871.24 together. Each child's Hope Scholarship account is spent separately, so money in one sibling's account cannot pay the other sibling's tuition.
